Android game development Income Stats March

Time to start posting my first Revenue report. From now on I’ll post all the revenue reports under the category “Revenue“. Every report will contain my statistics  from 10th of previous month to 10th of present month. So this income report is for the time period 10th March to 10th April. As I said earlier I use only AdMob ads in my games.

Box Game Egg Bounce Total per Month
Impressions Revenue Impressions Revenue
March 4,559 $2.44 774 $1.77 $4.21

Though Egg Bounce was released 20 days after the release of Box Game the revenue from it is much better. The CTR is a lot higher than that of Box Game. The reason is, Box Game has ads only on the Menu screen and not in the gameplay/level screens. Whereas in Egg Bounce the ads were on every screen, even on the ‘gameplay’ screen. Also in Egg Bounce you have to drag a spoon to play, and my ad is very close to that spoon! My intention was not to get more clicks, I just wanted to include an ad even on the gameplay screen and found that position to be the only option.

Ad Placement

Ad Placement in Egg Bounce

The black rectangle area represents the Ad placement on a phone. The ad gets close to the spoon on devices with very small screen sizes(3 inches / 320 x 240 resolution) and also on devices with Aspect ratio (Width/Height) greater than 1.5. That’s because I use a code which automatically adjusts and scales the game to fit the device screen without any change in aspect ratio (In simple words, squares appear as squares and wont get stretched and distorted).

Next time I have to keep all that resolution stuff in mind and design the game so that the users won’t get annoyed by the ad placement. So the conclusion is Box Game didn’t make much in the beginning but slowly started rising. Egg Bounce has a good CTR but is not getting many downloads. Lets see how they do next month.

First game was released a month ago

Its been a month since I released my first game (Box Game) into the Android Play Store. The game was published on 10 March 2013 and surprisingly I didn’t get any downloads till March 13th :(. I WhatsApp’ed all my friends who own android phones to download and rate my game. I hate to ask my friends, but since I got no downloads for my game on which I really worked hard, I had to ask them. As I expected only few of them appreciated my work and gave 5 star ratings, some just ignored my message, others said they were busy and will download it later and forgot about it! After all the help I did to them I could’t believe their response. After 16 ratings and reviews from them I started getting downloads. That day I got 74 downloads. Downloads then dropped to 5-10 a day. Very low downloads when compared to other games/apps.

Don’t know the reason why my game is not doing well in the Play Store. Even games which were not so good as mine were getting much better downloads per day! I guess its due to my app name: “Box Game”. I included the word “game” because I thought it would increase my downloads, but I was wrong I guess. When you search for ‘Box game’ with quotes excluded you won’t find my game on first page! So my guess is the term “game” is just ignored and the app is ranking only from the term “Box”. So don’t make the same mistake that I did. Never ever include include the term “game” in your app name. On April 6th downloads suddenly increased to 183 and graph stayed there for 3 days now. Not bad! 😀

On March 29th I published my second game which is called “Egg Bounce“. Immediately asked my friends again to download and rate it. Got just 2 ratings though! Best friends ever! Decided not to disturb/spam them again with my shitty games. This game unlike my first game had no levels in it. You just play endlessly to get the highest score. But it had better graphics and sounds. This game is getting 0-15 downloads per day. Lets see how it does next month.

The revenue generated from these apps is just 3.83$. Its very low but its been just a month and my downloads were low. I also started working on a third game now. Will release it next month hopefully. Just noticed that Box Game reached a total of 1000 downloads!

Next post will be a detailed report about the ads, requests and revenue. By the way I’m using ONLY AdMob in both games.

Journey starts – Goals set

My goal is to start earning 1000$ per month from my games within two years(2013-2015) from now. I have two more years till I graduate and I decided to reach my goal of making 1000$ per month from my games/apps within these two years. So that I can go for higher studies in US and maybe start my own company there if the revenue increases. Why start own company? Since I am from India after graduation we are forced to get a job and work for hours just to make a mere 5000$ per year! Other than a job other option is to go abroad(US) for higher studies(masters in Computer Science) which will cost a lot and I don’t think my parents are ready to spend such amount of money. Two more years will decide my future, either to settle with 5k a year or work hard, earn 1k per month and settle abroad.

At first I started game development just for fun as a hobby. I worked very hard trying to learn programming and design stuff all by myself from the free tutorials online, on my way I even had to compromise my studies (scored 66% out of 100 😦 ). Within months I released two Android games into Play Store and earned 3$ in the first month. 3$ is very low, but its just the first month and I can see the potential! I will try to develop more better games and work harder to reach my goals.

These are my goals that I set for this year (2013):

  • Get good marks this year in college ( Atleast 70% / 100 )
  • Start earning 50$ per month from August 2013
  • Release 8 more games into Play Store by August 2013

So the journey begins! I will keep you updated about my journey to success.
